Margaret

Margaret – Bass & Vocals.

In 1982, I wagged school one day went to the Bourke St Mall; saw a busker; introduced myself and started listening.  Eventually I learned enough chords, put my school bag down, and joined in.  I busked on the Streets of Melbourne for a few years playing covers and originals and graduated to duos, bands, pubs and clubs.

Searching for knowledge beyond the school of life, I bought a new bag and started a certificate in Jazz and Popular Music Performance at NMIT.  I didn’t take to jazz straight away, but discovered I could sing the blues when I auditioned for The Fabulous Blue Dog.  I fronted the band for four years as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist playing weekly residencies and the Melbourne Blues Festival.

Searching for another musical challenge, I took up Bass as my main instrument.  The band started writing original songs we changed our name to Cry Wolf releasing a self-titled album.

Several years later, Donna Jackson – Writer, Director and founder of the Melbourne Women’s Circus convinced me to cover my old school bag with glitter and join her 70s Glam Rock cover band; The Sharons .  On guitar and backing vocals I became ‘Sharon Angus Young’ along with ‘Sharon Lips’ (Donna) ‘Sharon Wildcat’; ‘Sharon Glitter’ and ‘Sharon Stoned’.  We had an outrageously fun time playing corporate gigs, Universities, pubs and clubs as well as three weeks performing  ‘Girls, Guitars and Big Fast Cars’ in the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

After a break to start a family in the early 2000s, I went back to bass and lead vocals to front several jazz/funk/rock bands including; Fat Azz; FONO; Garage a trois and Maggie May…

…now Mama’s gotta brand new bag!
